![]() ![]() I remember breezing through elementary school and middle school. You don't hear about the kids that didn't get "burned out" because they don't have serious feelings of inadequacy. It’s not for everyone but if you dedicate yourself to a field for long enough, and navigate an industry well enough, almost anyone can find similar success I enjoy the work and I think it suits me. I always was good at math and used to program calculators as a kid. When I moved out of my parents house I paid $280/month for rent in a super run down house with roommates. ![]() I got $1k of scholarship for the last two years for getting a 4.0 the first two semesters. The school I went to was roughly $8k a year. I managed to finance much of my degree and my living expenses through an internship I had for the last two years of school which paid $15-17 / hour. When I was back in school I took out $8k in loans which I paid off within a year of starting the new job. The large company would never have hired me without a traditional degree but the small one would have. There are boot camps you can go through which teach you quite a bit. Sometimes I wonder if I needed to take the 3 years to get the degree. Well, I went back to school in mid-America at age 26, lived with my parents for a year, graduated with a 3.8 in computer engineering at 29, and took a job with the “large company” then. And if you have some problems related to your mental health, concentration or anything else you should see therapist to get some help. So maybe you should put some energy in developing said habits instead of lamenting how great prospect you once were and what you did in elementary school. But as many researches have shown, correlation between intelligence and school success falls down as you get older(from around r=0.7 in elementary to r=0.3 in college) and working habits and personalit traits(like conscientiousness) become better predictors for earlier mentioned success. You know, every children with above avarage intelligence can cruise through elementary school with great grades and through high school to some extent. Those people need reality-check for their own good. I am sick of seeing all those posts from so called gifted geniuses who totally slayed in elementary school but later on somehow got stupid and "burnt-out" and supposedly don't have concentration to read a full book in college.
